Lino Gutiérrez's family fled Cuba just after the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. They spent fourteen months in Colombia before reaching Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1962.
He joined the Foreign Service in 1977. He served in the Dominican Republic, Portugal, Haiti, and the Bahamas, directed the Department's Office of Policy Planning, and was U.S. Ambassador to Nicaragua and to Argentina. He also served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs and deputy commandant of the National War College.
