José Sorzano was born and raised in Havana and came to the United States in 1960, fleeing communist Cuba.
He became a university professor and, in 1981, was appointed U.S. Representative to the UN Economic and Social Council. He then served as Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations with the rank of ambassador.
