Carlos Pascual's parents were Cuban refugees who fled the Castro government after his father was briefly detained for handing out flyers at a political meeting. The family got out on one of the last flights before the United States broke diplomatic relations with Cuba. He was three.
He built a career in foreign policy and development and served as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine and later to Mexico.
